We established the Diane Dammeyer Youth Photography & Social Impact Project in 2017 to promote photography as a tool for self-expression and to elevate the creative visions of youth in the USA and beyond. This is part of a suite of opportunities to support projects that utilize photography as a tool for social practice and encourage social awareness in students, recent alumni of Columbia College Chicago.
Each year young photographers document their surroundings, capturing fresh observations of our world. The workshops cover using basic photography techniques as a pathway to creative expression. Taught and assisted by alumni and students of the Columbia College Chicago Photography BFA and MFA degree programs, youth are encouraged to express their ideas about their surroundings through the practice of photography. Professor Peter Fitzpatrick oversees the stewardship/mentorship of the Diane Dammeyer Youth Photography & Social ImpactProjects.
Without the generous funding support from Diane Dammeyer, an alumnus of the Photography Department at Columbia College Chicago, and her husband Rod Dammeyer these activities would not be possible.
Canon USA is a valuable supporter and friend of the initiative. We are currently partnering with Centro Romero, Eyes on Main Street Inc. and Camera for Kids to deliver the youth workshops in Chicago Illinois and Wilson North Carolina.
If you are a current Columbia College Chicago Photography student who meets the following criteria you may want to submit a project proposal.
Sophomore, juniors, seniors, and graduate photography students who are enrolled in at least 1 credit hour for the current term or a future term. Graduate students enrolled in a 0 credit hour thesis continuance course will also qualify.
Students who are alumni of the photography BA and are now involved in a graduate program other than photography at Columbia are eligible to apply.
Collaborative projects that involve photography as a tool to elevate/build awareness of social issues and/or brings the skill of photography to a community youth group.
The project must have a demonstratable element of collaborative work with a community partner or organization.
Preference will be given to projects that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.
It is suggested that projects take place within the City of Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods however farther afield projects will be considered.
Applications including a project description that clearly demonstrates the level of social impact and collaborative nature accompanied by a project budget can be submitted at any time through the application portal
Applicants are highly suggested to reach out to community@colum.edu to discuss their proposed project before submitting an application.
Award amount is a stipend ranging up to $500 - $1,000

The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants.
