Community Metal Pour

Community Metal Pour - Comfort Station Logan Square held on SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6th 2022

Visiting artist Eric Fuertes and Columbia College professor Taylor Hokanson hosted a live metal pour at Comfort Station in Logan Square. Participants made their own "scratch block" to have poured on-site. No experience was required!

In the spring semester of 2022, West Virginia artist and professor Kay Dartt visited Chicago to collaborate with professors Dustan Creech (Elmhurst University) and Taylor Hokanson (Columbia College). With the support of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion grant from Columbia and a materials donation from United Erie, the trio held an outdoor metal pour in the garden at 11th and Wabash.

During the event, participants used a portable propane furnace to heat ingots of aluminum past 1200 degrees. Once melted, this material was then poured into resin-bonded sand molds, producing solid metal sculptures for students from both Columbia and Elmhurst. Students also suited up in safety gear and performed all the different roles needed on a four-person casting crew.

In addition to the pour, Kay delivered an artist talk, where she shared her lived experience as a queer woman in two traditionally male-dominated spaces: monumental sculpture and engineering. She also conducted studio visits and hands-on workshops; all told, Dartt had meaningful interactions with about 200 individuals during her trip to Chicago.

For fall 2022, the Department of Art and Art History will welcome Eric Fuertes to campus for another round of metal casting, with an additional event taking place in Logan Square at Comfort Station. Follow this project for updates as we solidify times/dates for these exciting events!
